Rollerplex Friday Night Open Hockey 7/29/05 — New Time

Tonight, but it's going to start a half hour earlier now. 10 pm to midnight, be there or be a kwijybo.

No doubt, most of you clowns would rather engage in some act of stupidness… …but by the oft chance that you'd like to get a little hockey in, by all means, you can join me at the rink. And with the earlier start, we'll even have time for me to buy you a beer.

Looks like we squeaked into first division land, and drew the first place Road Warriors in the opening round. So we'll get in again, in a rubber match, this time the stakes being elimination.

Who's coming back for next season?

Hey I can play now. And my cousin was wondering if he could play goalie, if Russel wasn't comming back (due to going to flight school.) Can I get a roster breakdown and find out how many people we are going to have. When does the new season start?

Final Regular Season (Summer 05) Goal Scoring

Goal tallies are unofficial, and will definitely vary from the even more inaccurate Rollerplex figures:
PlayerGoals
Matt24
Steve S.8
Colin8
Tim T.7
Chris4
Randy3
Scott1
Don1
Juinor1
Tim M.1
George0
Russel0

Team totals: 58 (5.8 per game) goals for, 50 (5.0 per game) against.

We had the same opponents in the first three weeks of the season and the last three weeks of the season, so I thought it would be interesting to see how we fared between beginning and end of season.

WLGFGA
First 3 games121619
Last 3 games211512

It seems we strengthened ourselves defensively, going from allowing over six goals per game, to an average of four (and actually, each of the last three games, our opponent scored exactly four goals). Offensively, we dipped by a goal over the three game sequence.

Game #10 Report: Phunk Junkies 4, Vineyard 2

Bah, Crusaders fall in the season finale, in an enervated display. It was a close defensive battle, but in the third period, Crusader team play seemed unmotivated, as if the excessive heat and humidity zapped the strength. Still, we were within one goal until Phunk Junkies tallied an insurance goal with approximately two minutes remaining.

Vineyard goals were scored by Colin and Randy. Our offensive execution in the third period was pathetic, and we couldn't breakout properly, hold on to the puck, or effectively capture loose pucks.

The loss leaves us with a 5-5 final record. Unsure where that will place our standing in the eight team league — the official standings posted still only show results as week #8, we were tied for fourth place with a 4-4 mark, and subsequently we split our final two decisions. But, irregardless, we will be playing another team next week, either as a low seed in the first division championship tourney, or as a high seeded entrant in the consolation bracket. As soon as information is made available by the staff at Rollerplex, I will post it here.

Game #9 Report: Vineyard 6, Road Warriors 4

In the biggest game of the season thus far, the Crusaders earn a big victory and spoil the first place Road Warrior's quest for an undefeated season. It was a close, hard fought, physical affair, which nearly came to a bench clearing exchange of blows, especially after the reality of a loss set in for the opposition. Many penalties were called on their squad, and many more should have been called, but only one Vineyard infraction, a slashing call on yours truly. Road Warriors opened the scoring, but then Vineyard snagged the next two goals. From that point on, Crusaders would tally an insurance goal, and then Road Warriors would eventually edge to within one again. This sequence was repeated until the very end when Matt slid an empty net goal to seal the 6-4 decision.

An excellent defensive effort by the Crusaders, and we kept in check the potent offensive firepower that blitzed us in week two. A frustrated Road Warriors squad then resorted to some nasty stick swinging, with our offensive forwards providing the target for an aggravated enemy. Steve was the victim of a vicious mauling at the end of the game, in retaliation for his offensive dominance — he put in two of our goals, one on an amazing rush started in the defensive end, and went around multiple defenders before a spectacular deke on the Road Warrior goalie. The rest of the goal scoring breakdown: Matt got two, Randy got one and Chris (or Don, I may have this mixed up) got the other.

Crusaders are now perched at 5 wins, 4 losses, going into a final week showdown with the Phunk Junkies, in a matchup that may determine whether we finish in first division or are relegated to the consolation playoff bracket. Matt won't be able to make it next week, let's pray for his mission to Honduras. As for the rest of us, let's bring our A game next week!

    Game #8 Report: Vineyard 7, Team A.M. 4

In the first two matchups (one last season, one earlier this season), the Crusaders were defeated in close, physical battles with Team A.M.. On Sunday, Vineyard got rid of the monkey, dealing a convincing 7-4 defeat to the overly aggressive Team A.M. squad. Vineyard play in the first period was shaky, as Team A.M. jumped out to a 3-0 lead and it appeared that the rink was tilted toward the Crusader side. Goalie Russel held the fort, however, until our defense took proper shape and form. At the onset of the second period, Vineyard began to assert its dominance, and that edge only grew stronger throughout the game duration. Even cheap shots, including a vicious boarding of Steve S. by #8 couldn't deter our team from victory. After the first three goals, Crusaders captured seven out of the next eight, and the fourth Team A.M. was a ridiculous garbage goal. Scoreboard baby!

As far as the goal breakdown goes, I believe Steve S. struck twice, Matt nabbed two or three (and suffered a broken stick), Chris got one, and I'm really not sure of the distribution of the remaining goals except that Juinor returned (first game of the season for him) and scored one too.

Vineyard now sits at 4 wins, 4 losses, with 2 games remaining. And next week is a rematch with the first place Road Warriors, who, prior to Sunday had not suffered a single loss as of yet, and manhandled our bench handicapped squad in week number two. So everyone must bring their A game next Sunday.

Finally, again, I bring a cooler full of gatorade on ice, and we are victorious (4-0 when I bring the cooler!).

    Game #7 Report: Vineyard 10, Roadrunners 2

Total domination was exercised by the Crusaders in a 10-2 romp over a shell shocked Roadrunner squad. The two Roadrunner goals came late in the game, and if it were not for a couple of missed goal calls, the mercy rule would have been imposed quite a while before the opposition put their first one in. Whether it was defense, passing, offense, getting to loose pucks, clearing rebounds, etc., the Crusader squad was up to challenge this Sunday afternoon. And it was great to have eight skaters, two four man lines to swap shifts.

The goal scoring breakdown resembled a bowling pin setup, as Matt got four, Colin put in three, Chris tallied twice, and Don wristed one in. Assists were plentiful, as Vineyard engaged in a good bit of tic tac toe passing, and moved the puck around beautifully and effectively. Only downer was not securing a shutout for goalie Russel.

Vineyard now sits at 3-4 W-L record, with three tough rematch games remaining, the first with Team A.M. next week, followed by the Road Warriors and Phunk Junkies. And on a final note — when I bring a cooler full of gatorade for post game refreshment time, we are 3-0 this season. I won't forget to replenish the cooler for next week, for certain…
