R2005FW Week 2: Snipers 4, Chilly Bombers 0

Skunked! Despite outshooting the enemy squad 23-17, the Chilly Bombers post a big fat zero on the scoreboard. The offical game boxscore shows a 5-0 deficit, but the scoreboard on the live game action displayed 4-0.

One of the Sniper goals resulted from one of our own defensemen directing the puck in. Chilly Bombers mounted intense pressure in the opposition zone at times, but were thwarted by a superb Sniper goalie performance.

R2005F Week 5: Scrappy Dogs 4, Reapers 1

Hard fought, defensive struggle that didn't see any scoring until mid-way thru the second period. However, the puck just didn't bounce the Reaper way, thus, the Reapers fall 4-1 to the Scrappy Dogs.

The only Reaper goal was scored by Scott S. on a blistering shot that the opposing goalie had no chance whatsoever.

I was curious about the shot totals, but it seems that the official game scoresheet is incomplete. Perhaps it was undesireable for the staff to record statistics for a replacement goalie.

Friday night open hockey at Rollerplex 05-09-23

10:00 PM, tonight.

Be there, or fallow in feculence.

Update: fairly good session, but I just didn't have much energy tonight for some reason… …had 5 or 6 skaters per side, but only one goaltender that departed about half way thru the session.

R2005FW Week 1: Bruisers 8, Chilly Bombers 5

New season, one new face (Ron) and the loss of Chris T. (and Steve S. temporarily, still recuperating from after accident aftermath) sees Chilly Bombers start off with a loss.

Bruisers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Bomber crew narrowed the margin to 6-4, before falling to a final of 8-5.

Bomber goals were tallied by Scott S. who scored twice, Mark M., Jeff, and Ron.

Game boxscore.

R2005F Week 4: Cluster Pucks 9, Reapers 2

Reapers turn in a gutsy performance but were outgunned and outmanned by a Cluster Puck squad that wore down the Reapers and their very short bench. Due to Scott E. suspension, Steve S. car accident injury, and others who've flaked off the roster, Reapers went with only five skaters on this hockey Sunday. Were it not for new Reaper skater Dave, we would have had no substitute skaters at all.

Landing on the Reaper scoresheet were Scott S. and GT, who scored his first league goal at Rollerplex.

An 0-4 start is disheartening, but I'm proud of my teammates who've hung in and hustled hard despite the adversity facing the team. Thanks all, I think we'll turn the corner and thrive once again. Already, I believe strongly we can compete with any of the teams in the league.

New additions to the team

I spoke to Mike yesterday from rollerplex and he told me were going to get two more guys in our line up for the remainder of the season. As to who we're getting is still a mystery. We're going to need help come this sunday especially being down a skater as it was confirmed that Scott Effinger is suspended from this sunday's game.

Rollerplex Stats Online

Starting with this season, Rollerplex is posting league, team and player statistics online.

Still, the stats are only as good as the scorekeeping and already my logged entries here do not match the "official statistics":

  1. Official numbers state we lost 3-1 to Handy Skaters in week 2 but it was a 3-2 score and Steve S. got gypped of a credited goal.
  2. For our most current result, I have the final score as 10-2 (against Road Warriors), but there it is posted as 11-2.
  3. We have no assists credited to any skater on our squad.

Scott E. (along with Road Warrior Josh Davis) is listed on the player suspension list.

Player Quicktips Offense

Tips for forwards cut and pasted from a coach's manual on roller hockey:
  • Always try to advance the puck forward into your opponent's end — pass ahead to a teammate

  • When in doubt, shoot first, think later — take the shot eve if it's not a good one — follow your shot to the net and stop in front for the rebound

  • 2nd forward in should charge the net for the rebound

  • If you have a teammate with you on a scoring opportunity, shoot early so that one or both of you are still in front of the net for the rebound

  • Never chase the puck into the corner into the corner in your own end, let your defense go get it

  • Don't chase the puck behind the opponent's net if your teammate is already there

  • Forecheck, don't give the opponents time to get organized

  • Don't cherry pick — skate back into your defensive end when you lose possession of the puck — your defense needs your help to break out of your end

  • Backcheck, help the defense out, cover the opponent's forwards 1st, then the opponent's defensemen

  • Only one man after the puck at any time, everyone else should find an opponent to cover in our end or an open space to receive a pass in the opponent's end

  • Stay spread out. Occupy at least two adjacent lanes. Don't get bunched up!

  • Pass back to your defensemen, especially in the opponent's end

  • Always keep moving (skate circles if necessary)

  • Communicate with your teammates!

Next, I will post a list for defense (defensemen).

R2005F Week 3: Road Warriors 10, Reapers 2

Reapers played with only five skaters for much of the game after a fight erupted between Scott E. and an opposing Road Warrior. Scott E. angrily responded to a stick in the throat, and a melee ensued where Scott E. bloodied and marred the face of his challenger, after successfully sliding the helmet off so he could render some blows. Scott E. was tossed from the contest, but I believe he will be able to play next week.

Besides escaping a mercy defeat and avoiding the embarrassment of a shutout, that was the only Reaper battle won on this hockey night. A shortened Reaper bench could not matchup to the larger Road Warrior squad. A rash of penalties were taken by both sides, as the refs called it fairly tight after the fight incident.

Despite equipment problems early on, goalie Shaun played admirably in defeat, especially in the last period, when, despite the onset of fatigue, the Reapers were able to exhibit some decent team play, scoring twice, and as stated, successfully thwarting the full throttle Road Warrior attempt to mercy us. Reaper goals were tallied by Don and Scott S. who scored on a bullet of a shot. Also, an absolutely gutty performance by Steve S., who is still reeling from the after effects of an automobile accident earlier in the week, yet nothing could keep him from lacing up his skates and giving 110%.

Hopefully, we can add some skaters to our roster, as it appears that several who pledged to play this season have flaked out on us, including Chris, who was a no-show last night and didn't notify anyone of his absence, unlike last week, where he was tied up in procuring a new puppy. Roger did not return my call and Tim T. (Don's brother) has not participated in a game this season. I reckon some folks would rather play video games or watch football than play hockey — a sentiment I cannot comprehend, I must confess.

A positive aside — I believe that had we had a full bench, we could have easily emerged victorious in this contest against last season's league champions (and a team we have beaten before and defeated by only one goal in the playoffs). We're still struggling offensively, but I see signs of improvement and greater teamplay. While we may not be blessed anymore with gifted goal scorers, as a team, if we work hard, we can beat any team in this league.
