Player Quicktips Defense

  1. Never pass across the slot (the middle) in your own defensive end — keep the puck along the boards

  2. Don't screen your goalie (block your goalie's view to the puck) in your own defensive end unless you plan to block the shot yourself — let him see the puck at all times

  3. Only one defenseman after the puck in the corner in your own defensive end at any time, the other defenseman should go to the front of our net and look for an opponent to cover or a loose puck to clear

  4. Hold the point inside the opponents end (inside the red line); give your forwards someone to pass to

  5. Take the shot from the point, don't try to stickhandle all the way to the opponent's goal — give your forwards a chance for a rebound

  6. Always keep moving; (don't get caught flat-footed)

  7. Don't panic around your own net — shoot the puck out of the slot first — then get control of the puck and break out

  8. When in doubt clear the puck in your own defensive end — don't get fancy — even if you have to shoot it all the way down the rink

  9. Stay slightly ahead or slightly behind the other defenseman — always keep the option open to make a lateral pass between you if one of you cannot advance the puck or take a shot on net

  10. Communicate with your teammates!
